Dr. Clare completed his medical degree at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2013 and completed his residency in Family Medicine at Nassau University Medical Center in 2016. Dr. Clare enjoys spending time with family and currently resides in Brooklyn with his wife and daughter. About Dr. James Gough, MD
James Gough, MD was born in Schenectady, NY. He became fluent in Spanish during his 4 years of high school living in Bogota, Colombia, where his dad worked for GE. He returned to the US for college and in 1973, graduated from Antioch University with a BS in chemistry in 1973. He earned his medical degree from the New York University School of Medicine in 1977. Dr. Gough completed his pediatric training at the Residency Program in Social Medicine at Montefiorre Hospital in the Bronx.
Dr. Gough came to Brooklyn in 1980 to run the School Health Program at Brookdale Hospital and started a private practice in pediatrics. In 1989, he moved to Ditmas Park where he opened a second pediatric office near his home. In 2009, the office moved from Cortelyou Rd & E 18th St to our current address at 1103 Cortelyou Road.
Dr. Gough is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics SUNY Health Sciences Center at Brooklyn, board certified in Pediatrics, a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and is a board member of the Brooklyn Pediatric Society. He and his wife Maria, who is from the Dominican Republic, have 5 children and 6 grandchildren.
Dr. Gough practices what he calls collaborative “wholistic” medicine. The word “wholistic” comes from our English word health, which is derived from the Latin word ‘hale’ meaning whole. The more common word ‘holistic’ is of uncertain origin, possibly coming from holly bushes with the mystical mistletoe and related to the concept of holiness. By practiving “wholistic” medicine, Dr. Gough attempts to focus on more rational concepts with broader, more long range goals as opposed to narrow, short range objectives (eg. Tylenol reduces fever in the short run but may not help overall). Dr. Gough is extremely impressed by and committed to rigorous medical science, but is similarly impressed by and committed to powerful natural phenomena such as breast feeding, natural foods and normal physiological reactions such as fever. He strives for a collaborative approach where he explains his thinking and suggestions to families, listens carefully to their ideas, and tries to come up with a plan that best fits the needs of the individual child or adolescent.
